Sterling Silver Set From Pickford & Fairbanks to Spyros Skouras. Three-piece sterling silver set: a plate, bowl, and cup, each piece engraved "Colleen Dionysia Skouras / From / Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks / January 1926." Each piece (engraved "International Silver" with a silver hallmark) is engraved with Dutch children playing with a dog, a sailboat, playing a flute, etc., across a background of a farm and windmills. The plate is 7" in diameter, the bowl 4½" in diameter and 1½" high, and the cup is 2½" in diameter and 2½" high. In excellent condition and a beautiful set.
Pickford and Fairbanks were the most popular actors and couple in the world. Spyros P. Skouras (1893-1971) was a poor but astute Greek shepherd who came to America with his brothers in 1910 They eventually bought all the movie theaters in St. Louis and sold them to Warner Bros. in the 1920s; Skouras was hired to manage them, and this is how he came into contact with Pickford and Fairbanks, who gave this enchanting children's silver set to his daughter Colleen. It has remained in the Skouras family since. Skouras became president of 20th Century Fox in 1942 and was a powerful and prominent figure in the movie industry.
