Lot 404

The Hatfields and the McCoys. Six documents from the feud that gained national fame and became part of American folklore. The families lived near the Kentucky-West Virginia border, near the Tug Fork River, the Hatfields on the West Virginia side and the McCoys on the Kentucky side; both families farmed and made and sold "moonshine" whiskey. The feud supposedly started with a dispute over a hog, then escalated into a war between the two families and the two states, resulting in 12 murders and years of legal wrangling. We offer six documents covering the years 1866 to 1898. They include three arrest warrants for murder (1885, '97, and '98), a warrant to bring in a witness who disobeyed his subpoena (1888), an 1868 warrant ordering the arrest of three of the Hatfields to collect a financial judgment, and an 1866 document giving the McCoy patriarch's response to a lawsuit involving some of his cousins. Documents vary in size and are very good to fine, except for one (1885) which is separated at one fold and part of another. A unique collection.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.
