Hancock, John (1737-1793) American Revolutionary politician and statesman. Member of the Continental Congress (1775-80, 1785, 1786); president of the Congress (1775-77); first signer of the Declaration of Independence; governor of Massachusetts (1780-85, 1787-93). Document Signed as Governor of Massachusetts, 1 p, 12¾"x7¾", Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1781 May 16. Fine. The document has been archivally backed with japan paper and encased in deacidified Mylar, which can be easily removed if desired. Hancock authorizes Edmund Quincey and John Avery to take depositions in the divorce case of Mary and George Lobb "and the Depositions…you are to seal up, and transmit to the court…together with this commission.…" The seal of the Commonwealth is at upper left. An outstanding example of Hancock's signature.
