Ellery, William (1727-1820) Member of the Continental Congress; Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Autograph Document Signed as the first customs collector of the port of Newport, on laid, watermarked paper, 1p, 5"x7¼", Newport, 1797 Aug. 19. Fine; small area of paper loss at upper left affects the top of one letter. Ellery certifies that "one brass field piece marked U.S., Five boxes of shot, and Ten barrels of powder have been landed in this Port from on board the Brig Little Sally James Taylor master from Philadelphia."
