Sicily, Syracuse. Time of Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Gold Double Dekadrachm - 100 Litrai (5.78 g), struck c. 405-400 BC., or 396 BC. Head of Arethusa left, hair in sphendone and ampyx decorated with stars, star behind; ethnic to left. Reverse: Nude young Herakles strangling Nemean lion. SNG ANS 330; SNG Cop. --; cf. Gulbenkian 325. Some very minor striking flatness. Obverse die showing usual rust and some degradation, but not enough to mar the more delicate rendition of the nymph seen here. The reverse crisp and fresh, and truly one of the more memorable artistic triumphs of Greek coinage. Nearly Mint State.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.
