The gold certificates are a vivid reminder of "hard money" days before the Great Depression when a $10 bill was, in reality, a money substitute, an I.O.U. whose redeemability in real money is stated on its face: This certifies that there have been deposited in the treasury of the United States of America ten dollars in gold coin payable to the bearer on demand. PCGS graded Fine 15PPQ.
