Lot 2890

Great Britain. Rose-ryal, ND. S.2613. James I, 1603-1625. Second coinage. King enthroned holding orb and sceptre, with portcullis at his feet. Reverse: Square topped shield in center of elaborate Tudor rose, pellet stops and mint mark escallop both sides. This coin is more common in low grade (Fine to Very Fine) than the slightly smaller and more ornate James I third coinage rose ryal. But in high grade this second coinage piece is rarer. Surprisingly evenly struck on a large full flan, it shows no signs of the creasing, damage and weakness associated with this issue. Sharply detailed and with a good portrait, it is as nice as any example offered in recent years. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.

Realized $12,650
