1866 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 63. Some mnor flyspecks. Very choice with light toning. Shield nickels were not introduced until the summer of 1866, by which time many had ordered Proof sets and singles, but not of this denomination. The Mint announced that Proofs could be acquired singly for 10¢ each, and over a period of time several hundred were sold in this manner, but not nearly as many as would have been the case had they been offered in January. Today the 1866 shield nickel is important for its status as the first year of the denomination and also as the only affordable Proof issue of this two-years-only with-rays style. Pop 30.
