Lot 985

1862 $10 Liberty. Proof 64 Cameo. A wonderful example, in fact, incredible! The surfaces are a warm yellow gold with all the devices nice and frosty. The mirror fields are watery, slighty dished and fully mirrored. A few trivial marks scattered about along with a reverse scratch near the D in TEN D (possibly present during minting), a good diagnostic reference for future identification. The proof mintage for this year was a mere 35 pieces with probably fewer than half that amount actually delivered. The best estimates today are that perhaps a dozen or so are known of which two are ensconced in institutions, the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society. As far as choice proof examples are known, this coin is in an elite class with six others. PCGS reports 6 in this grade with none higher. Removed from its "slab" this coin is accompanied by a PCGS tag as PR-64 Cameo (PCGS # 8798) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

Realized $47,150
