Lot 851

1806 $5 Capped Bust. Round 6. PCGS graded MS-63. The round top or knobbed 6 of 1806 is easily identifiable as all have the stars divided as 7-6 rather than 8-5. It is the most common of all the dates of Scot's heraldic reverse design. R.W. Miller Sr., in his study of early half eagles, mentions that a "well known collector amassed nearly 100 pieces of this variety in the early 1960s." Now 40 years later, it would be virtually impossible to duplicate that collector's assemblage. It is likely that many of the mint state coins now available to collectors were from this hoard. This specimen is nicely struck on the obverse with some weakness on the reverse in the lower left quadrant. Also noted in the same area are faint traces of adjustment marks, likely part of the reason for the weak areas as the planchet was thinned a bit in that spot. The luster is virtually complete in warm medium yellow. In an old green label PCGS holder. Pop 53, with 36 in 64 and one in MS-65.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.

Realized $17,250
