Lot 768

1844-C $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-53. Nicely struck fror the date, with a low mintage run of only 11,622. Breen-6175, with large C mintmark. Commenting on the rarity, that author mentions that this date is "usually (seen) F-VF" and that it is "prohibitively rare AU". He further interestingly reports that the minting process was "interrupted because a burglar raided and burned down the mint building during the night of July 27, 1844." As a result, minting was not resumed until early in 1846. We wonder if this coin might have been one of those grabbed by that pre-Civil War second story man. Just an obsessive die variety specialist perhaps? Pop 7 with 28 finer.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Realized $5,635
