Lot 524

1890 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. If the proof mintages of the two 1878 varieties were combined, this 1890 with only 590 pieces struck, would be the lowest mintage Proof Morgan Dollar. Even if the 1878 mintages are considered seperately (respectively 500 and 250 for the 8 and 7 tail feather varieties), the 1890 is still the third lowest mintage. That combined with the outstanding quality makes this a very desirable coin. The strike is superb. Miss Liberty and the beautiful eagle seem to float on liquid mercury. The contrast between the completely frosted design and the essentially perfect mirror like fields is excellent and demands repeated observation. This superb white Gem is one of the very best specimens in extant and as such is quite important. Population of only 3, with 1 in 68 Cameo Star.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
