Great Britain. Uniface Die Trial, C-N 20 Pence (1963). Obverse portrait without legend, fine beaded rim; blank reverse. Issue date unknown but probably about 1963 as the Machin Head would soon be used for the Decimal Coinage, proposed in 1961, announced in 1966, and issued generally in 1971. This piece is actually the size of the Five Pounds issued in 1980, with the same portrait used for the commemorative Silver Wedding 1972 25 Pence, Queen Mother 1980 25 Pence and Royal Wedding 1981 25 Pence. Here called "20 Pence" because it's approximately twice the size of the New Ten Pence coin first issued in 1968 to circulate concurrently with the old Florin. The idea was to slowly introduce the public to the new concept of decimalization. Brilliant satiny silvery surfaces and a lot nicer looking than the number-grade would suggest. Extremely rare, possibly only 2 to 3 exist. NGC graded MS-60.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,500.
The Cheshire Collection.
