Lot 3242

Great Britain. Pattern silver Double Florin, 1911. George V. ESC-401. Plain Edge. One of several experimental pieces, struck in sandblast or Matte Proof by Pinches. Design by Reginald Huth (famous too for his Hawaiian patterns). Elegantly conceived, this pattern depicts the monarch as Caesar, bearded, toga about his neck. The portrait is most lifelike. On the reverse, the Manx triune legs within a sunburst pair of rectangles, the "arms" including a Welsh dragon, and in the angles of the quadrants a thistle, a leek, a shamrock, and a thornless open rose. Other than the magnificent Terner specimen, which was PR65 or finer, this is about the nicest example to be found. Medium gray toning. Super-bold Proof strike. Tightly graded. NGC graded Matte Proof 64.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400.
The Cheshire Collection.
