Lot 3128

Great Britain. Proof bronze Halfpenny, 1879. Victoria Bun Head. Freeman dies 14+0. S-3956 for type, but Spink does not list a Proof for this date. Neither do Freeman nor Peck, but that may be explicable by the sheer rarity of this date, obviously a Proof of Record (the cataloguer has seen one intact Proof set of this year, and its existence should certainly be known by both Freeman and Spink). The gorgeous Proof halfpenny is probably R7: 2 or 3 thought to exist. This coin, of glorious quality, is probably the finest known, a Gem with gleaming chocolate-brown surfaces and remnants of mint red, mauve toning, surfaces glittering and nearly flawless, sharp as a tack in strike. A simply irreplaceable rarity! NGC graded Proof 65 Brown.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,250.
The Cheshire Collection.
