Lot 3107

Great Britain. Bronze Halfpenny, 1862, "A at lighthouse" variety. Victoria Bun Head. S-3956. Just to the left of Eddystone Lighthouse appears a small, capital letter "A" which touches the linear line. Michael Freeman (The Bronze Coinage of Great Britain, 1985, page 85) calls this a die-letter, and in fact die-numbers are known on certain bronze pennies of 1863. Freeman-290A (as "R17," 16-50 known). The cataloguer has handled and described almost every kind and variety of British coin, but this is the first of this variety he has seen in 25 years, which makes Freeman's rarity estimate suspect, too liberal. An attractive Uncirculated coin with just a hint of mint red in evidence, the surfaces a lovely chocolate-brown. Overall a good strike with sharp definition in the queen's hair. Most observers would call this coin Choice with no reservation. An extremely rare coin, virtually never available for purchase, in such a fine condition that it must rank about the finest known, if not in fact the best one extant. We expect serious bidding! NGC graded MS-63 Brown.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
The Cheshire Collection.
