Lot 3102

Great Britain. Proof Halfpenny struck in copper-nickel, 1861. Victoria Bun Head style, as used on the bronze coinage of 1860 onward, type of S-3956. Peck-1773 (called "extremely rare"). A really lovely specimen having lightly toned surfaces showing slight golden iridescence. A few very faint carbon spots on each side, attesting to the original nature of the surfaces, and barely visible except under magnification. Peck notes that these experimental pieces, made of 80% copper and 20% nickel, were struck for comparison with the Jamaica coinage also made from this alloy. Not present in the famed Nicholson Collection. NGC graded Proof 65.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,800.
The Cheshire Collection.
