Lot 3033

Great Britain. Proof copper Halfpenny, 1853. Victoria Young Head. S-3949. Recut date. Medal-die alignment. Quite rare, from one of the few special Proof Sets made in this year, official reason never given. Sets are known in heart-shaped velvet-lined maroon boxes, suggesting that Victoria commissioned these for some personal reason. Very few were struck, but it's also obvious that restrikes were minted, probably within a year or two, as more than a few singles exist. Intact sets are prohibitively rare, however. This halfpenny is very lovely with delightful surfaces showing light iridescent blue toning on top of light-brown copper. NGC graded Proof 64 Brown.
Estimated Value $375 - 450.
The Cheshire Collection.
