Lot 3005

Great Britain. Copper Penny, 1849. Victoria Young Head. S-3948. An important rarity in this popular coinage style, one that is seldom seen even near Uncirculated. Almost a Gem coin, with beautiful surfaces that are a slightly faded mint red, showing a brilliant cartwheel effect to the luster. The field before the queen's face has a dim stain, which must be the reason it was not graded MS65. The strike is bold on both sides, with exceptional detail in the small helmeted head of Britannia, in the folds of her dress, and in her fingers and toes. The portrait is also deeply detailed, showing all the small definition in the queen's hairdo. One of the finest known examples of this key date; in fact, the consignor has researched this copper classic extensively, in old catalogues and auctions, and believes it to be the finest piece seen on the market in some three decades. The Spink price guide gives a value only up to EF grade, another indication of its extreme rarity in Mint State. We expect very heavy bidding by copper and Penny specialists. NGC graded MS-64 Red & Brown.
Estimated Value $3,750 - 4,500.
The Cheshire Collection.
