Great Britain. Rare variety Gothic Crown, 1847. S.3883 variety; ESC-288 var; Dav-106; KM-744. Victoria. Lettered Edge, "Un Decimo". Proof with reverse upright. A trial or presentation piece with the edge inscription between two bevelled borders, which unfortunately cannot be viewed in the thick slab. A most unusual and excessively rare coin. Maybe Unique. Although it has a lettered edge, this coin has the same reverse die axis as the plain edge Proof (see next lot) and not the die axis of the other lettered edge coin (see previous lot). This makes it a fascinating hybrid. Beautifully toned and an exquisite rarity. A few faint hairlines under the wonderful color, and a minute line on the queen's face, but this coin is no "64" in the cataloguer's humble opinion. Gem Proof. NGC graded Proof 64.
