Lot 2638

Great Britain. Proof Crown, 1831. William IV. S-3833. ESC-271; KM-715. "WW" on truncation. Very rare. Mintage unknown, long said to be 120 pieces for the Coronation sets of this year. However, contemporary restrikes obviously exist as more than that are known. Nonetheless, this is one of the rarest crowns of the modern era, and exceedingly difficult to locate anymore in a truly choice state of preservation. Most seen are dull gray, lifeless, cleaned, dipped. Not so this lovely specimen! Lightly toned, one of the nicest pieces seen on the world auction market in recent years which seems very harshly graded by NGC. Every collector of 19th-century British coins desires this classic crown but few own it. If you have the means, consider placing a strong bid, because it could be some time until an equal 1831 Proof crown is available (most of the better ones are still part of the complete Proof sets, adding even more to the financial difficulty of acquiring one). NGC graded Proof 62 Cameo.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.
The Cheshire Collection.

Realized $15,525
