Lot 2544

Great Britain. Proof silver Shilling, 1817. George III. S-3790. Plain edge (not viewable in the slab). Rare. Second year of the so-called New Coinage, made on the presses of the former Soho Mint, sold to the Crown for use in the Tower Hill Mint, located outside the northeast corner of the Tower of London's walls. England had just come out of the Napoleonic Wars, and again silver was plentiful. The new portrait and improved minting quality were welcomed, the coins made in large quantities. Most perished in circulation but even today Uncirculated examples are common. Superb ones are not, for the majority were poorly stored. Proofs were a different matter, struck in fairly good quantities (exact mintages unknown) but, again, today, nice examples are far from common. This is a Choice coin with pleasing golden gray toning (the sort most often seen on silver of this time), and a strong Proof strike. NGC graded Proof 64.
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,300.
The Cheshire Collection.

Realized $920
