Russia. Nicholas I (1796-1855). Nicholas was the third son of Paul I and brother of Alexander I, who died childless. Nicholas was dictatorial and paternalistic, but he did make efforts to stabilize the ruble and reduce the growing national debt. His attempts to dominate the Ottoman Empire led to the Crimean War (1853-56).
