Lot 1938

Russia. Ruble, 1818-SPB PS. Bitkin-H-96/97; Dav-281; Cr-130. Alexander I. Lettered edge. This specimen is sharply struck with handsome old toning in steel blue and russet. A few of the design's highest points on the reverse are slightly flat due to the lapping of the novodel dies. This feature does not detract in the slightest and in fact is instructive as to the procedures utilized during the production process. Bitkin has categorized this type as a Rarity 4, indicating that only 2 or 3 specimens are believed to exist. We cannot imagine a finer one than the Excessively Rare example here offered for your bidding pleasure. PCGS graded Proof 66.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
The Dr. Robert D. Hesselgesser Collection, Ex-Virgil Brand Collection.
