Lot 179

1827 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar. Restrike. PCGS graded Proof 63. These famous restrikes are believed to have been produced at the US mint sometime from 1850-60 from the regular obverse die of 1827 and a reverse of 1819. As there are varying degrees of die rust on known specimens, they were probably restruck during at least two, and possibly more, periods during that decade. The obverse of this specimen from an 1827/3 die is well struck and exhibits only minimal die rust in the lower right quadrant. The only remnant of a 3 under the 7 is a tiny knob at the very bottom left of the 7. The 1 and 8 of the date show recutting and the 2 has a curled base. The reverse has essentially a full strike though not quite as sharp as the obverse, and considerably more die rust particularly on the left and bottom portions of the coin. A very faint die crack runs from the left edge through the U to the eagles' wing. The toning is an even silvery gray on both sides nicely contrasting the devices and there is no post-production damage or marks of any kind, excepting a few hardly visible hairlaines. PCGS has graded a total of 14 coins of which several are undoubtedly resubmissions. Population in PR-63 is 6. Additionally, there are 3 in PR-64, 1 in PR-65 and 1 in PR-66. (PCGS # 5374) .
Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.
