Lot 1784

Russia. Novodel Ruble, 1723-SPB. Bitkin-H655; Sev-607; Diakov-182, N1. Edge-6. Peter I. Well struck with an excellent portrait, attractive surfaces and lightly toned. This rare specimen is an unusual example of a novodel for a coin which never existed an an original. Though dated 1723 with the Saint Petersburg mintmark, that mint did not begin producing coinage until April 1724. It did not come to the attention of Russian numismatists until mentioned by Zubov in an 1897 publication on Russian coins. A characteristic of some of these mule novodels is a noticeable convexity, as with this specimen, of the St. Petersburg obverse dies which were extensively reworked to be paired with smaller diameter Moscow reverse dies having a 1723 date. The die improvements and convexity provide a most attractive appearance for these most interesting and extremely rare novodels. PCGS graded AU-58.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 30,000.
