Lot 1746

Russia. Novodel 3 Ducats, 1714. Fr-Unlisted; Sev-Unlisted. 10.44 grams. Peter I. Laureate and draped armoured bust right. Reverse: Crowned double headed eagle holding sceptor and orb. Unknown to Severin in this weight, though he mentions a 2 Ducat novodel at 6.94 grams, nor apparently to more recent Russian compilers as well. This prooflike specimen is fairly well struck from an obverse die which has obviously been refurbished after long use and storage. The reverse die has also been worked and there is a noticeable die break from the hind quarters of the dragon through the eagle's right claw down to the rim, a diagnostic for comparison with others of this weight (should one ever be seen) and novodels of other weights. Extremely rare and possibly Unique. PCGS graded MS-63.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 35,000.
The Dr. Robert D. Hesselgesser Collection.

Realized $29,900
