Lot 157

1855 Liberty Seated Dime. NGC graded MS-67. The 1853-55 with arrows coinage indicated a lower total weight and was intended to help keep silver coins in circulation. The huge gold discoveries in California caused the price of silver to rise in terms of gold, thus massive amounts of older silver coins were being melted to take advantage of this value discrepancy. The plan worked and the new coins stayed in circulation. Not many were saved, thus mint state coins are scarce and gems very rare. This specimen is sharply struck and handsomely toned in natural irirescent shades. Pop 1, with 2 graded as MS-68 and those two possibly the same coin resubmitted (PCGS # 4607) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.
