Lot 1086

1881 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. One of the key dates of the entire $20 gold series with only 2199 business strikes plus 61 proofs made. Breen (no. 7280) says "possibly 12 known, mostly EF or AU with bagmarks". Bowers also commenting on circulation strikes adds, "…rarities in any grade, with no more than a few dozen believed to exist in numismatic hands". Sharply struck with bright luster and a bit of prooflike surfaces, typical for this date. Some contact marks primarily in the obverse fields are commensurate with the assigned grade. This is the only Mint State example graded by PCGS and it is quite possibly the finest known business strike. An exceptional opportunity for the Double Eagle specialist.
Estimated Value $60,000 - 80,000.

Realized $69,000
