Tracy, Spencer. 16 x 20 in. production still from the 1930 play The Last Mile, that proved to be Spencer Tracy's big professional break. The shot shows Spencer Tracy (he played convict "Killer" Mears) in the center cell on Death Row, watching as another prisoner is given the last rites before being led away to execution. Signed "Vandamm" by the photographer in pencil on the border. Film director John Ford saw Tracy's performance and convinced Fox Film Corporation to hire Tracy for Ford's film, Up the River. This photo hung in the office of the show's producer, Herman Shumlin. Material from Tracy's pre-Hollywood days is excessively rare. Together with two related promotional pieces of ephemera for the play.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Realized $312
