Lot 829

1856 Flying Eagle Cent. PCGS graded MS-61. An original example of this heavily sought after rarity! Uniform light chocolate brown surfaces have subtle blond highlights and lack any serious marks. The only technical characteristics we see that would warrant this grade are some light hairlines, a patch of very tiny horizontal scratches left of RIC and a dull scratch through E of ONE on the reverse. The eagle is bold and without any friction or hits. A small planchet depression exists just below the C of CENT. Apparently Snow-3 variety with the Closed E's on the obverse die. We do note heavy repunching in the date with significant portions of each numeral existing to the right. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent, with a mintage of only 634, is decisively more rare than its proof counterparts and there are only approximately 20-40 examples existent for each grade level from MS-60/61-MS-64 at PCGS. With Flying Eagle cents always being a necessary addition to any small cent collection or U.S. type collection, the business strike 1856 can take that collection to the next level (PCGS # 2013) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 13,000.

Realized $16,100
