Roman Empire. Caracalla, 198-217 AD. AE 43 mm. -- Medallion, of Pergamum, struck c. 214-216 AD. Laureate and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right. Reverse: Cuirassed Caracalla on horse right, had turned to regard attendant behind, at right, image of Asklepios on column; inscription around and below. BMC Mysia p. 154, 321; SNG Cop. --; cf. SNG von Aulock 1414 (smaller flan); Mionnet II 631. Well centered on huge round flan. Some very minor, discreet smoothing. With variegated red, green, and black patina. Large and impressive. Rare. Very Fine.

This example is one of a series of large pictorial medallions struck by the city to commemorate Caracalla's visit to the Pergamene temple of Asklepios in 214 AD. Caracalla must have received some relief from his ailments after his visit. He then ordered the reconstruction of the healing god's temple, along with that dedicated to Roma, plus several others, thus heartily endearing himself to the Pergamenes who were moved to strike these commemorative issues.
Estimated Value $750 - 950.
