Lot 2298

1907 $5 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-68. A serious condition rarity in this superb gem grade and Tied for Finest Known! The surfaces and skin are so original that the rich gold coloration has faint hints of blue in protected areas. Liberty's device is strong and the metal flow on the cheek has a velvety appearance that shifts under illumination (a look seen only on the finest rare gold). Reverse quality is just as impressive and reassures the bidder that they are bidding on one of the Finest from the whole Coronet Liberty Head half eagle series. Identified by a small mint made planchet depression to the lower right of star 6 (0.5mm).

While 626,100 half eagles were struck at Philadelphia in 1907, survival rates drop off dramatically in grades above MS-64. Most would find it difficult to locate a nice and properly graded MS-66 example let alone trying to find an example as impressive and dignified as this specimen. Bidders will have to "step-up" in order to acquire this beauty. Population 2, tied for finest graded.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.

Realized $25,300
