Lot 2214

1889 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. The final year of issue of this long-running gold series. A recorded mintage of 2,429 is somewhat deceptive as survivors are found in relative abundance from AU-55 to MS-64. Make no mistake though, accurately graded superb gem examples are not abundant in any form and the present gem is one of the finest known of this issue. Unbelievably thick and swirly luster is present over the entire coin. Coloration is a deep, original orange gold. Every detail is entirely brought up from a strong strike. Liberty's cheek displays fine granularity from minor rust on the dies at the time of striking. Identified by a small lint mark coming off the back of the upright of E in STATES. A small patch of blue film is present on the reverse, original and commonly found on high grade three dollar gold examples. We feel the combination of technical and aesthetic characteristics found on this specimen are choice and much finer than the average MS66. Perfect for the demanding type collector in search of a superb three dollar gold piece! PCGS population of 8 in MS-66 with only 2 finer, both MS-67 (PCGS # 8011) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.

Realized $21,850
