Lot 2159

1852-D $2.50 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Intense orange gold surfaces with thick, frosty luster. Well struck with all of Liberty's hair and all feather detail fully defined. A shallow scuff is noted on the cheek and some stray, light hairlines are found in the fields. The reverse possesses even more luster and matching sharpness of detail. Above the head of the eagle is a patch of sky blue film, underneath which lies a few scratches. One of the finest known for this low mintage issue, only 4,078 being struck. Noted gold specialist commented on the scarcity of this issue when he commented: "It is very rare in About Uncirculated". PCGS has graded only 5 in this grade with a single MS-63 finer. Unquestionably a rare numismatic offering! (PCGS # 7765) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.
