Lot 1067

1814. Large Date. JR-3, Rarity-2. PCGS graded MS-64. One of the nicest early Capped Bust dimes we have handled in quite some time. Aged silver surfaces have gorgeous rainbow toning in swirling patterns on the obverse. The reverse has tints of steel-blue and iridescent rust orange toning. A finely granular frost covers the fields and the devices. Stars 1-7 are fully struck up while stars 8-13 are a little weak. Some strike weakness is also noted on Liberty's curls furthest to the right, the right side of the neck of the eagle and the tip of the eagle's left wing. The strike weakness is minor and for the most part this example was well struck as evidenced by the clashmarks near stars 5-7 depicting the leaves from the reverse. A fine die crack exists from the lower portion of the beak to the central shield. Another fine die crack starts just left of 10 and continues to the middle of the shield, meeting with the aforementioned die crack. Early Capped Bust dimes just never look this nice and original. While PCGS has graded this coin MS64 and the strike weakness could be a reason to technically not grade this specimen gem, the eye appeal is unquestionably gem! PCGS population of 19 in MS64, 4 in MS65 and a single MS66 as finest

Please note that the present example is housed in a PCGS Small Date holder. This is incorrect, the coin at hand is a Large Date example, more specifically a JR-3. This variety is identified by the larger date, the center dot on the neck, the beginning of the scroll under the left serif of D and the absence of a dot after 10c (PCGS # 4489) .
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.
Ex-Garrett Collection.
