Juárez, Benito (1806-1872) President of Mexico from 1858 to 1872; one of Mexico's most respected patriots, sometimes called the Abraham Lincoln of Mexico. Partly-printed Document Signed as Interim President of Mexico, Palace of the Federal Government, Mexico, February 23, 1860, 16½ x 10½ inches. Appointing Santiago Fapia as head of maritime customs with a salary of 3,000 pesos a year. The document is clean and attractive, with a large vignette at top of an eagle on a cactus devouring a snake; one seal is missing in left margin. Juárez' signature is neatly signed with a paraph. Archivally matted with an image of Juárez to an overall size of 30½ x 16¼ inches. Of the many historical phases experienced by Juárez, signatures from this period are rarest.

This document was signed during the War of Reform, between the Liberals and Conservatives. After the resignation of President Comonfort, Juárez, who was president of the supreme court of justice (the equivalent of vice president), issued a manifesto and assumed the presidency on January 19, 1858. Because of the opposition of reactionary forces, he installed his government at Vera Cruz and only entered the capital on January 11, 1861, less than six weeks before this document was signed. Less than a month later, in the general elections of March, Juárez was elected as constitutional president over Miguel Lerdo de Tejada.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.
