Eden, Anthony (1897-1977) British Foreign Secretary (1935-38, 40-45, 51-55) and Prime Minister (1955-57). Autograph Letter Signed ("Anthony"), on personal stationery, Broad Chalke, Salisbury, August 27, 1957, 4 pp, octavo. To Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, discussing personal matters--his health, working on his memoirs, taxation questions, etc. Of great interest is his P.S. about U. S. policy toward Arabia and Egyptian President Nasser: "As to Arabia, I see that U.S. abstained at U.N. over Oman. I do not see how we can agree a common policy with them as long as backing sand is their basic Arabian policy. To try to lure Nasser away from the Russians as some suggest will not work; it is likely to make him only more attractive to Moscow. He will come our way if he has to, & if he can, which is highly doubtful. A." Political insight from the British prime minister, the same year he was forced to resign for trying to regain control of the Suez Canal after its nationalization by Egypt's President Nassar. One blemish at top of first page. affects three letters of written address, else fine.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.
