Lot 898

Draped Bust Dollar. 1798. Heraldic eagle reverse, close date. B-12, BB-120, R-4. PCGS graded EF-45. A variety that is scarce in the higher grades. Luster still remains in the periphery and some light golden hues are seen in the charcoal toning of the borders. The wear on the high points is minimal and blends in well with the general original appearance of the coin. Strike weakness on the reverse to the right of the eagle's head (as always seen on this variety). Identified by a small but distinct lint mark at the tips of the lower arrows. A pleasing and solid presentation of this variety and of a Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle dollar in general.

The cataloguer of our September 2002 Sale of the San Marino Collection of Bust Dollars pointed out that the Condition Census for this variety at the time was as noted in the Bowers Encyclopedia, finest is the Bowers Somerset 1992:1321 as AU-55 (Bowers Plate Coin); next is Bowers Tuttle Sale, 1981:2980 as AU-50; next are two XF-45 coins (perhaps this specimen); and then a small group of XF40 coins tied for Fifth Finest Known. Therefore deduction would lead us to believe that the present coin is tied for Fourth Finest with one other specimen (PCGS # 6873) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.

Realized $4,025
