Lot 2082

Macedonian Kingdom. Phillip II, 359-336 BC. Gold Stater (8.6 g), Pella mint, struck c. 345-340 BC. Extremely Rare! Laureate head of youthful Apollo right. Reverse: Charioteer driving fast biga right, star beneath horses; in exergue, ΘIΛIΠΠOY. Le Rider p. 135, 59. Apollo of extraordinarily refined, delicate style, but lightly double struck -- the reverse more so. Two minor ancient knocks on portrait, a larger one at reverse exergue. Coin with a good deal of residual luster. Comes with ancient (c. 1920's?) Spinks coin flip and envelope, where the coin was originally priced at £4.40! Nearly Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
Ex: Cf. Leu Auktion 76 (10-27-99), lot 101, for a prime specimen, which realized 12,000 CH Fr. As their cataloguer notes about this lifetime issue…. "This stater a part of a small series struck during Philip's lifetime. Le Rider recorded only four specimens with the star symbol, all from the same pair of dies…." The obverse of the above coin is from the same die as that of the Leu coin. However the reverse die is clearly different from those illustrated by Le Rider -- most notably in the positioning of the charioteer's arm holding the kentron, and the placement of Philip's name. With this die we see the commencement of the typical reverse style of the many Philip staters which followed.
