Lot 1682

$5 Gold Indian. 1908. PCGS graded Proof 61. A very desirable issue from U.S. gold coinage and presented here in a very uncommon grade. It is not uncommon to see offerings of superb gem examples of these Indian Head proof issues, 1908-1915, and the prices can be quite high for the gem examples. What is very unusual is to have the opportunity to purchase one of these proofs in Proof 61 or 62. PCGS has graded only 2 Proof 61 examples and only 3 PR63 examples from the entire series, 1908-1915. This specimen possesses pleasing color and an uninterrupted matte finish. No disturbing marks or scratches exist.

The U.S. Mint report states that 167 proofs were made in 1908. At the time of the introduction of these new proofs, the U.S. public was hesitant to accept the matte finishes, desiring the brilliant proofs instead. Lack of collector interest led to many being spent and/or melted while mintage figures subsequently declined the following years. Today these matte proof issues are considered "classcis" within United States gold coinage (PCGS # 8539) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,000.
