Lot 1539

$2.50 Gold Liberty. 1868. PCGS graded Proof 61. A low mintage proof quarter eagle with only 25 pieces struck. Light hairlines in the fields and a few ticks here and there but a very decent coin and choice for the grade. Highly reflective fields for a lower grade proof and the eagle is still quite frosty on the reverse. A shade of lavender toning on the reverse as well. Proof quarter eagles in this grade range, PR58-PR62, are quite scarce due to the fact that most that did survive were given a helping hand by past collectors and their condition preserved. A nice opportunity for the collector to acquire a more modest example of a real proof rarity. PCGS has graded only 1 in this grade and a total of only 9 proof 1868 quarter eagles have been graded in all grades (PCGS # 7894) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.
