Lot 1534

$2.50 Gold Liberty. 1855-D. Sharpness of About Uncirculated. Cleaned. The 1855-D quarter eagle had a mintage of only 1,125 pieces and is the rarest issue struck at the Dahlonega Mint. Survivors in the AU range are excessively rare and correctly graded examples in AU55 or above are considered Condition Census. This issue, along with the 1856-D quarter eagle, is generally the last and most difficult issue for the dedicated southern branch mint collector to obtain.
The present example shows signs of old cleaning, with the obverse displaying the heaviest on the device which has a slightly polished appearance. The fields are mark free and some color has toned back in the periphery and protected areas.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Realized $5,750
