Lot 99

1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze, with "L". PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. PQ. Doubled 6 in the date. 90% full red, with just the slightest mellowing of the original color. This is a choice piece in an exceptional grade for the variety. PCGS reports only 51 in this grade and 2 in MS-66 RB.

1864 saw two changes in the Cents. The first was a change in the composition from the thick, Copper-Nickel versions to a slimmed down Bronze. Second, the designer's initial ("L" for James Longaccre) was added to the obverse. These two changes created a number of different varieties for the year, for which collectors are eternally grateful. The 1864-L Cent is perhaps the rarest variety of the year (PCGS # 2080) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Realized $2,300
