Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 25

Lot 3164

Argentina - Tierra del Fuego. Gold Gramo, 1889. Fr-2; KM-Tn 1. Gold pan with nuggets; on top, "POPPER" dividing pan. Reverse: Gold pan with nuggets; on top, crossed pickaxe and sledge hammer; fineness and weight in minuscule but ill-defined letters at bottom. Choice Very Fine.

Julius Popper was a Jewish explorer and adventurer, who eventually established a monarchy of sorts on the remote archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, off the coast of Argentina and Chile. Gold was discovered there, and these unusual coins, weighing one and five grams, were struck on the island (cruder issues) and later at Buenos Aires. These are very likely the exact specimens plated in "Jewish Minters and Medalists" (hereafter abbreviated as JMM) by Daniel Friedenberg.
Estimated Value $300 - 450.

Realized $805
