Lot 2494

1813 $5 Capped Head. Miller-120, Unlisted in Breen. NGC graded MS-61. An exceedingly rare variety, listed as Rarity 7 by Miller, unlisted by Breen, and, even more importantly, a variety missing from the vast Bass collection. Both 1813 varieties share a common obverse, so one must go to the reverses to tell the two apart. Here are the diagnostics for this variety: Right base of second T in STATES directly over the left side of the I in PLURIBUS (on Miller 119, the right base is over the center of the I). Also, on Miller 120 the lowest arrowhead points to the serif of the I; on Miller 119, the arrowhead points to the center of the I.

The example offered here features ample mint luster, faint surface abrasions, and no noticeable marks. The obverse is mostly yellow in color, while the reverse sports some attractive, coppery toning. As a type coin, this piece possesses considerable merit; as a rare variety, it should command a nice premium.
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

Realized $8,625
