Lot 2426

1857-D $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. A crisply struck example with soft, satiny luster and a delicate, yellow-gold color. Most of the denticles and all of the stars are well-defined (a treat on any coin from this Southern Mint) and even the tiny die chips that are scattered about the obverse are readily visible. All 2,364 1857-D Quarter Eagles were struck from a single die pair and they remain prime rarities in the series. Mint State examples are exceedingly rare -- PCGS reports 6 in this grade, 5 in MS-62, and 1 in MS-63 (PCGS # 7783) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 21,000.

Realized $18,400
