Lot 2165

Great Britain - Scotland. Pattern Shilling, 1799. George III, an elegant engraving of the king in full armor. Scottish crests in the angles of the reverse shield. Conceived by Colonel Fullarton (the correct spelling of his name, although usually given as "Fullerton"), engraved by Milton. These were long thought to be private patterns but new research has suggested that they were seriously considered at the time of their minting to replace the old shilling, which by 1799 was no longer in production (the 1787 type). This was a time generally of metal shortage, a time of war in Europe, so nothing actually came of this charming experiment. This shilling is from a set which originally would have included a number of denominations, farthing through halfcrown. Dr Terner adored it as an example of what might have been. Its quality, while given a fairly mundane number grade, is simply stunning. Deep mirrors accented by truly exquisite iridescent blue and gold colors. A wonderful piece! PCGS graded Proof 64.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,250.
