1909 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. Popular first-year-of-issue sans the designer's initials. A tempest in a teapot arose when the public caught view of Victor David Brenner's tiny initials on the bottom of the reverse on the first 1909 Lincoln Cents. Oh, what a crime he committed -- placing his initials in a "prominent" place on the coin. The punishment -- the immediate removal of the offending letters on Cents issued later in the year. In fact, Brenner's initials didn't reappear until 1918, when they were placed discretely on the truncation line of Lincoln's bust. What a horrible ignominy to heap upon a man who created America's longest lasting coinage design! (PCGS # 2431) .
