1873 Indian Head Cent. Doubled "LIBERTY". PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. The "King" of the Indian Cents struck for circulation. This is the Snow-1 variety, one of two varieties in which LIBERTY is doubled. This is the more obvious, and certainly the more desirable, of the two. This variety was caused when the hub that was being used to punch the working die pivoted slightly between impressions. The doubling is crystal clear on LIBERTY, Liberty's philtrum (look that up in your Funk & Wagnall's) and nose are doubled, as are the first S and the ES of STATES. This variety is so popular and so distinct that it has earned its own listing in the Redbook. In the Brown format, none have been graded higher by PCGS, and only four coins (this being one of them) have earned the MS-64 grade. This is a special and exciting opportunity for the advanced collector of this immensely popular series.

As an aside, we point out that Dr. Juan Soros, who built the finest collection of overdated U.S. coins ever assembled, included an 1873 Doubled Liberty Cent in his collection because of the distinctive variety -- however, his was the less desirable Snow-2 variety.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 17,000.

Realized $15,525
